These are most of my blocks from SewConnected2. A lot of very talented quilters have made me a block, and I really want to finish this quilt as beautifully as possible. I am tempted to sew the blocks together without sashing, and then add a pieced border...
But I am also auditioning fabrics for sashing... This is where I get confused. I know these things are a matter of personal preference, however, I would like you to tell me what you think of the different colors.
I already have some opinions on Flickr, but I would appreciate to hear what my blog-friends have to say too.
This first I really like, most of the SC2 group did not ;)
It is true, as one friend pointed out, that it does clash a little with the light green....oh no...
But then, how do you like this next choice? It is bluish/purple, and it has a slightly different texture than the cotton. I like this one too.
The last one, the pale blue, looks much better in the photo than it does in real life. Strange how that works out sometimes! I like it, though.
I also tried a navy and a brown sashing, but both of those made half the blocks look chopped off, because of the colorflow. So those I don't like.
What do you think??

Have you tried white??? and you know I am not a quilter...
I don't know I kind of like the yellow. Definitely not the purple or blue. The yellow kind of makes it pop. I say go with what you really like.
i like no sashing. but maybe you could use the colors in the blocks and individually frame each block with the color that does the best job. beautiful work.
What a lovely collection of blocks! I think it looks better with some sashing - personally I would go for white or the yellow. Can't wait to see what you decide - it is going to be a masterpiece.
I agree that it looks nicer with sashing than without. I prefer the light blue of the colors you posted, but what about a white or cream, or maybe black? I think the blocks would pop with one of those.
The blocks look great!
I like the white or pale blue the best, it makes the single blocks stand more out.
Hi Tine
I like the yellow the best. As bright as the quilt is to start with, the yellow perks it up a bit. I don't care for the lavender and the light blue cools it down.
I, too, would like to see what they look like on white, or Kona snow (off white), or black.

Looks like I'm in the minority, but I don't think they need any sashing at all.
I LOVE the way they look together. And sashing, to me, just turns it into a boring 4x4 quilt. Without sashing, the eye travels all over the quilt and slowly focuses and reveals each of the blocks. Way more interesting than looking at a block surrounded by sashing.
As for a border, don't piece it. A nice 5" (or more...I'm very fond of wide borders) of the navy (or color of your choice, provided it's already in the quilt) would really pop out the blocks.
I've often seen quilts where the maker thought because there were 10 fabrics used in the making of the quilt, she must use at least that same amount (and same fabrics) in the border. Big mistake.
If you do a pieced border, it's just competing with everything going on in the blocks. A solid will frame it and allow all the blocks to shine.
Here's another opinion--you asked. If you sash you are highlighting each block since they are all so different. If you don't sash, they do blend together and like Michele said, it makes you look around the quilt. As far as sashing color, I couoldn't tell you if white would work without seeing it. I don't particulary care for the last two colors you showed - the dull the top. Let us know what you decide. Such great pure colors in the fabric.
I love the colour of the fabrics Tine, I like the yellow or none at all. Hope we get to see what your chose.
my first instinct is to say no sashing. I think the quilt would look amazing like that first photo.
If you did want sashing though I would go for the bluish purple. It makes the colours pop.
I have to say I agree with Michele - no sashing, and a plain border of a color already in the blocks sounds best to me. Each block is already a work of art, so a pieced border would take away from their appeal. Such fun to read everyone else's opinion. :>}
Hia Tine I too am wondering about a narrow black sashing and border then a wide pieced border so that it doesn't compete with the actual blocks by being given it's own area. I would then bind in black.
Can't wait to see what you decide to do. :-)
