Messed up the math :-(

I finished the sashing, and as I was sewing, I noticed, that this was not going to be as large as I wanted... Aaaack! I have messed up somewhere along the way, and as the top is now, it is 125cm x 172 cm (50" x 68")... I am thinking it's too short. Charles is atleast 190cm (6'2) tall, and I know it'll bother me forever if I think it's too short for him!

So...I figure my options are:
1: make another 5 blocks (yikes), no borders.
2: a narrow brown inner border and either a scrappy border or a border made from this sheet.
3:take my chances and leave as is
What to do?

  1. It looks terrific! What a shame it is a bit small. I would suggest adding another row to make it a bit bigger so you will be happy with the finished product.

  2. Tine, this is really beautiful. I LOVE the scrappy logs with that brown and orange sashing. Very masculine too.
Usually I make my single person quilts 60"x80".. which I think is around 152cmx203cm (around there).. so what I would probably do is just add a 10"border to the sides and a 12"border to the top and bottom.. (all the way around). The sheet fabric would work really good I think, unless that would cut you short for the backing. Is that what you were going to use?

  3. Math..ugh! I would just add another row of scrappy log cabins! YOu have several months until Christmas still!

  4. It looks so good, just add the borders you planned. Let me guess that you´ve been sewing after the children fell asleep in the evenings... It happens, if you are tired...It is good that you still have time to finish this before Christmas! ;-)

  5. hmmm....I'd say go for another row of log cabins. Although Eileen's idea of a big border would be nice and simple.

    (I hate maths!!!)

  7. My vote is to add borders ... it will "frame" the center part of the quilt nicely and really highlight the beautiful squares! I think a solid border would be nice (and still masculine).

  8. You have done such a lot in such a short time that it probably wouldn't take you long to whip up another row of blocks, but if you have had the number of blocks set in your head for a while, it takes a lot of willpower to actually do that (been there before...) and if you haven't got enough of the brown for the sashing, that's not an option.
I think I would go for the wide border. Or maybe a narrow one first (blue perhaps?) and then a wide one (another brown?)? I'm just rambling on here, hope this makes sense to you. Anyway take a few days to think it through before you decide - you might wake up with the perfect idea for your next step!

  11. I think a border would take care of the problem. Maybe a skinny border to match your setting squares and a solid border around that?

  13. I think the suggestions for a solid border sound like a good idea. It's absolutely stunning, though!

  14. Tine, I'd add a brown boarder and then do a scrappy print for the binding! Looks great!

  15. i'm guessing you ran out of brown. if you can get more. i agree with others that you should do a border in brown with a scrappy binding. i'm thinking of Charles. for me that sheet is perfect. but i do think Charles will like it either way.

  19. I vote for making a border with that awesome sheet! I hope, someday, that I can tackle a quilt that big! It's beautiful!

  20. Oh dear! And it looks so fabulous! Definitely something I would do - my maths is hopeless. I would go for the border - but I think I would keep the borders fairly simple so that they beautiful chaos of the blocks remains the quilt's focus. Or just shrink Charles.

  21. I vote for a flower boarder- That would look great and then bind it in blue or black. It looks great!

  27. Ooo! Use the sheet to make borders - I think that would tie everything together so nicely and then it would fit him too. =)
